This portraiture series is comprised of four pieces. Each demonstrating the transitions of identity as influenced by the dictation of a lens. The way we present ourselves to the public and private eye shifts subconsciously in nuances. Consider candid, posed, gaze averted or directed at the lens, and in our modern media - 'selfies/mirror selfies'. I believe that in consolidating these approaches, we are thus asked to take the opportunity to analyse these otherwise overlooked phycological attempts to present some portrayal of authenticity to the viewer.
In the instance of my friend Joan, the subject of this series, I have observed not only transitions in approach to her aesthetic, but to gender identity, approach to life, love language and culture. Knowing Joan has inspired me to resist the fear of change, bearing my flesh through creativity and searching my soul for my own answers. It was an honour to work with someone I have such a fond admiration for.
